G-Style Entertainment Press Release December 2005

G-Style Entertainment in conjunction with Eve Media Records is staking its claim as the label to beat in 2006. The soon to be household name is the brainchild of Houston's own Rob G, with the help of managers/business partners T.C. Thompkins and E. White, the independent upstart aims to do major label numbers with the help of "major" distribution. The current G-Style roster consists of Houston natives The S.W.A.T. Product (GT Garza, 245, Dolemic, V-Zilla, Rob G & Suave Sleez) and Pitch Brown. The S.W.A.T. released a mixtape earlier this year showcasing the talents of the 6 man crew, with V-Zilla emerging as the first solo artist set to release his mixtape "The Day The Game Changed" Vol 1. later this month and his major label debut "Interview With A Monster" in March 06.

Another G-Style artist, GT Garza, is also set to jump out of the gate with his mixtape entitled "Maverick Music" hitting the streets in Jan. 06. With Rob-G's recent inking to Latium/Universal and the buzz being generated from the camp as a whole, 2006 is easily shaping up to be the year of The S.W.A.T. GT Garza recently received regular radio rotation on Houston's Party 104.9 with his version of Ashanti's "Still On It' Remix featuring Paul Wall. Rob-G is currently enjoying commercial radio success with not one but two singles featuring Universal Recording Artist "Chamillionaire" who's album recently debuted in the Top 10 on Billboards Top 100 chart.

V-Zilla is next in line with the completion of his new single "I Have To Go" b/w "That Boy" set to hit commercial radio in the near future, as well as his video for "Head Banger Boogie Monster" slowly beginning to make the rounds to 40 different TV/Cable Access shows around the nation and overseas. The highly regarded solo artist has made a reputable name for himself in the underground and will finally catapult himself to the top of the competition with his forthcoming releases. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: We are happy to announce the recent inking of Houston's own PITCH BROWN to the G-Style Entertainment Fam. The self contained 2-Man Unit consists of MC's "Nicks" and "Rokfa", with "Nicks" also doubling as lead producer for the duo. Hailing from the Northside of Houston, Texas, these cats have been burning the midnight oil, perfecting their craft, which caught the eyes and attention of long time friend/supporter Erick Quiroz aka "Q" and Local Hip Hop Artist V-ZILLA, who now serve as official management for the group.

THE STORY...THE CO-SIGN:
Something about the whole thing just felt right, I recall the first time I met these cats too. Their man "Q" kept telling me about their potential. Being an artist myself, you already know how many folks come up to me on the regular, "so and so is rapping now", "Can you listen to this CD my boy made", so of course I was skeptical from jump street. However, I remember taking a listen anyways, this kid "Rockfa" had this swagger, talkative flow that jumped out at me immediately. I couldn't help but notice the production was extremely soulful, so it shocked me to learn that "Nicks" was behind the boards for all of their tracks. To make the situation even more crazy, he was also an MC and both these cats are from the neighborhood where I grew up, with this... SOUND!!. My advice to them was to keep working, and pretty soon what started out as me giving them some tips and pointers when I had the time, turned into the beginnings of "The Album Before the Album". I was one of them cats that stayed the fuck home, while everyone was scurrying about like animals out of their cage, I watched as folks took 12 hour trips out of town that normally take 2-4 hours, a bus full of elderly folks burn to death right outside of dallas, my local gas pumps run out of petro and my THUNDA'GROUND SHOWCASE get cancelled for nothing...

Had a great time, literally thousands of folks in the crowd (Pictures and Video Coming Soon Courtesy of Fly Guy Productions) and we proceeded to rock'em. Afterwards headed to Club Stingers for the afterparty... Crazy time.. Akon is cool peoples, been having a blast hitting the road and getting more and more exposure from both sides of the game... It had been about a week since Phoenix, the feedback, the phone calls, the show bookings, everything had stepped up 10 fold since then, finally got some great momentum going and we were slated to perform @ The Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert... On what felt like the hottest night in The H... We put on a hell of a show.. The Good Folks @ Mofoz Visualz wrote a nice little review about the show... Trust me when I say WE SHUT IT DOWN!!!

SEPTEMBER 20-29 2005: THE MIXTAPE IS MOVING NOW:

Maaaaan..Been hustling copies all over the place, 21 *NEW* Blazing Tracks of Hip Hop and Reggaeton featuring Rob-G and The S.W.A.T. Click, Frankie J, Natalie, Big Gemini and Play N Skillz. "Houston's home, I'm coming for whoever scooped the throne//No matter if their Houston's own"- V ZILLA "The Breakdown"

Yes indeed....When I first hopped on the blog-wagon, I figured I would have time in between studio sessions, work, late night hustles and shows to slide thru and keep my peoples ears perked... Little did I know i'd be this busy, and i'm cool with that, no sleep and all. So much has happened since September, that I felt compelled to take a break and bring you cats to speed... So here it goes, hope you enjoy the contents of this blog, don't really know when I will have time to type another one...

PART ONE (1) IT ALL STARTED IN SEPTEMBER:
I been down with my crew The S.W.A.T. Product for a minute now, and as the last cat to actually joint their ranks, it felt good to see how much they cut for ya boy, on every level. Of course, ROB-G is the one that made it all possible, his recent signing to LATIUM/UNIVERSAL opened the doors and paved the way for THE S.W.A.T. to get put on and for my solo deal to end up w/ SONY Distribution was just icing on the cake. So the movement begins..

PHOENIX ARIZONA SEPTEMBER 8-10 2005:

Maaaaaaaaaaaan... The S.W.A.T. Blazed thru Arizona for 3 days promoting THE MOVEMENT MIXTAPE VOLUME 1 and tried to set the spot on fiyah the best way we knew how to... and thats by putting on a good show...We performed at the Club 95 Latino Vibe Concert for Fiestas Patrias and the crowd held us all the way down (Shouts out to Belen and Friends for doing the damn thing in the front row).... We originally performed Saturday night and tore the place up...It got so rowdy at one point, the host had to step up on stage and remind folks that kids were in the front row and to try and restrain themselves from getting too crunk.. hahahaha.. It was lovely...

Fast forward to Sunday, we have a booth set up and selling merchandise outside of the stage area since we were not scheduled to perform this day, alot of folks from the night before were back again (since it was an outdoor festival), seen us and started up The S.W.A.T. Chant... 20 minutes later.. were given a 25 minute time slot and guess who murders it once again... Maaaaaaaaaaaaan.. I was so exhausted at the end of the show, I literally fell out on stage and finished my verse on my back... The crowd loved it.. I was desperately in need of some H20...

Overall though...Phoenix is a beautiful city, with the blue skies and mountains everywhere you go...Can't forget the HEAT, but it's pretty much the same as back home... just more dry. Everyone at the station (manic and co.) to the promoters and just folks in general showed us alot of love throughout the trip and handled everything for us in a professional manner. Some real dope after parties went down at Club Tropicana that Friday night and at The Hard Rock Cafe that Saturday.... I can't front, that left us feeling a little spoiled.. hahaha.. but on the cool it was very much appreciated and we hope to get back there in November.

For those in the Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa area... be sure and hit up the radio station CLUB 95.1 LATINO VIBE and request Rob-G's "Vamanos" , "Get Loose" or the "How to Deal" Remix w/ Frankie J... Keep the flame lit and we hope to see you soon...

Toyota Scion Uses Hip-Hop To Sell Their Cars… Then Censors Hip-Hop Artist.

TEXAS, August 24, 2005. Austin based rapper Bavu Blakes was pleasantly surprised yesterday (Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005) when he got the call from Jay Cortez of Inform Ventures, LLC (info below) announcing that he had been selected from a pool of over 2,000 submissions as a Top Ten Finalist in the Scion: Nextup contest.

According to Allhiphop.com, the “Scion: Nextup contest is holding it's second annual emcee contest which gives unsigned emcees the chance to win a $50,000 marketing deal from Scion. Judges, DJ Premier, Green Lantern and Sean Cane will filter through the applicants to find the ten best. The online contest will then feature the top 10 underground artists original songs on the Scion: Nextup site for visitors to vote on. The emcee(s) with the highest number of votes will win. Prizes include $5000 in cash, the opportunity to perform at Scion events and a fully-produced music video for their winning song.”

Bavu Blakes received an affidavit stating that he was in the Top Ten – chosen by DJ Premier, Green Lantern and Sean Cane, and that voting would commence, online, Monday August 29th on the website www.scionnextup.com.

Today, he received a call, again from Jay Cortez, stating that he had been removed from the contest because of the political lyrics in his song “Black Gold.”

The lyrics in question are:

1. "Now Bush and bin Laden got so much they rotten"
2. "Texas home of the real death row"
3. "What'd we really go to Iraq fo?"

In reference to line #2, Bavu Blakes was asked if he was referring to the Los Angeles based company Death Row Records.

While we understand that any corporate entity has the right to include whoever it wants in their promotions and marketing strategies, we find it quite funny that a company so hell bent on using hip-hop to promote it’s products would have the audacity to censor an artist.

Inform Ventures, the company working with Scion on this promotion has an interesting mission statement on it’s website www.inform-ventures.com:

“Our environment is in transition. Information outlets have increased, forming a new infrastructure for the next generation. We create messages compatible with this new infrastructure then disseminate that message through our media and promotions network.”

And they censor the words of the people who they are presumably trying to reach.

Scion as a company has garnered a lot of praise and has also taken a lot of heat over the past couple of years for their co-opting of hip-hop music and culture to sell their cars. Does this action prove the nay sayers right? Find out for yourself. We feel as though Scion and Inform Ventures need to be taken to task for their decision. If they are so down with the streets and hip-hop culture then why are they trying to censor one of it’s strongest voices?

Chuck D once said that hip-hop is the CNN of the streets. If Scion and Inform Ventures can’t handle that, maybe they should just leave it alone.

MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON THE MATTER:

EASY...Typical Bullshit.... I heard the "Black Gold" Track (I think at the SA Show) it is what it is in terms of political correctness, but then again... it just shows how the corporate mind frame thinks in regards to the Hip Hop Culture... The whole "express ya self" sentiment died out years ago in the eyes of corporations that lure you with $$ and sponsorship bullshit.. then turn around and say... oh but you cant say this and you made reference to this... Would they have kept the track had he plainly spoke on SOARING GAS PRICES for their signature Vehicles...

They should just label it an UNSIGNED MC Search for songs that have nothing political, cussing or require any real train of thought... Then Vu would still be in contention....

It's one thing to makes subtle music/artist sacrifices if your signed to a label and their trying to market you efficiently, it's another thing to sacrifice artistry for a non-music coporation who is making $$$$$$$$$$ off of our culture, but offering jack shit in return...

FURTHERMORE... IM SUPRISED AS FUCK THAT DJ "WALK THRU THE UNDERGROUND HOLDING OUR TORCH" PREMIER ..Would judge a contest that was so blatant with it's censoring practices... brings to mind the whole "Yall Are Violating, Straight Up and Down" Rant on The Moment of Truth Album.... Matt just said that he hasn't heard from Premier yet, but hopes that he speaks on it...

OHHHHHHHHHHHH BEFORE I FORGET LET ME JUST SAY 4 THE RECORD:

I aint got nothing against the vehicles...the hard-workers, sales folks, finance folks, etc.. that do their jobs on an everyday basis for their Scion employer.. BUT Simply the practices used for this contest in general... I can't even front...SCION has put together some memorable ass Hip-Hop shows with LEGENDS in the last year... Some that alot of my people have taken part of and showcased for, but the question remains at what PRICE ? and what is the Trade Off ? I guess it really aint different than the folks @ KOOL or MARLBORO that shove FREE PACKS of Cigarettes down ya throat at the clubs for filling out a survey... It basically boils down to a GIVE and TAKE... You Give folks your best and they find some way to TAKE it from you... One of lifes many cruel rules... Wack!

THE SHOW:
I aint gon' lie to you, if you wasn't @ The Rhythm Room this past Saturday (August 6, 2005) for the monthly BENCH (Brought to you by BBC and Comp 1) then you missed the absolute best show I have ever been blessed enough to rock and be a apart of. Usually, I get hit up w/ emails, phone calls, guest book entries from my supporters after one of my shows, One of them selfish perks an artist lives for to see what folks thought about it. I have neeeeeevvvvver evvvvveeeer sat and wrote my own review about a show, but just this once, I will break it down because daaaaaamn.. It was definitely a sight to see.

The Rhythm Room was stuuuupid packed..It had to be well over 85-90 degrees in that bitch come show time, if anyone has ever been to this spot in the City's Old 6th Ward section you will know that the venue is a local and regional live band setting, equipped w/ a decent bar, free water cooler, pool tables, decent sound and what felt like absolutely no A.C. at all. The line-up included Up and Coming local Hip Hop acts and DJ's still hustling right outside the commercial walls to make a new for themselves.

After some slight group delays and Comp 1' thoroughly spinning the B-Boys into a Frenzy w/ the Old Skool Classics, No Reccs(sp) took the stage first and got the crowd amped up with his One Man Show. The beat-box technician launched into his story telling/sound effect filled set and showed the crowd a taste of his talents, including renditions of Audio Two's "Top Billin'" and Jay-Z's "Brush ya Shoulders Off".. a nice jump-off for the night originality wise. With the crowd now gathering closer to the stage, The 3 Man Turntable exhibition consisting of Akshun Kid (Krackernuttz), DJ Remix and DJ Baby Jae (Krackernuttz) handled up on the wheels of steel and laced the crowd with Gem after Gem, mixing, cutting and slicing the soundscape with their variety of musick. It was tooo gangsta. The highlight was when the morphed into Biggie's "10 Crack Commandments".. Sick

With the venue reaching unbearable heat, folks mingled, hit the bar and gathered themselves back up to the front for the Video Premier of my new street joint "Head Banger Boogie Monster" Directed by Houston's Own FLY GUY PRODUCTIONS. The soon to be released DVD contained an intro from Latium/Universal Recording Artist Rob-G and featured a gang of cameos from local Hip Hop Luminaries such as The S.W.A.T. Click, S.I., Lower Life Form, Savvi, Que and Dark Sunz to name a few. The reaction from the crowd floored me, heads applauded, screamed...straight up victory cheered for ya boy...I was so amped up on the side of the stage I almost couldn't contain myself...

BBC introduces me... When I walked onto the stage.. maaan. shit was electric, nothing but fist pumpin.... My hype-man Chico was already screaming at folks, "Yall muthafuckas ready for Zilla"... The beat drops... GAME OVER!!!!!! ...I love the transformation that takes place when I step on that stage, there is nothing else like it... No high, No alcohol, No aphrodisiac, nada...I could see the look in peoples faces.. I can feel their vibe, their current running through me.. that shit is just.. crazy.. I will leave it up to the folks that attended the show to comment on my performance, I can't critique my own shit.. but I think I held it down.. naw, fuck that.. I know I held it down.

The Highlights of the evening for me was to bring out The Legenday K-O. We performed the "Untitled" track from their forthcoming "48 Seasons" which then segued into their underground classic "WORLD REKNOWN". D was so hype on the delivery that I thought his vocals was gonna jump through folks chest in the front row NEO style... Mic back doored him with the same intensity and gave the crowd an unbelievable treat, as well as me a breather... I ended the show with the what I think the crowd was waiting for and that was "HEAD BANGER BOOGIE MONSTER"..I got so caught up in everyone screaming the chorus and leaning down talking to Druski from fly guy that I missed the opening lines of the 3rd verse... Thank god for the hype-man, hahaha.. I reeled it back and ended it the shit ZILLA STYLE...

THE SUPPORT:
The Encore.. WOW...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't prepared for it.. I learned that lesson in San Antonio a couple weeks ago when I wasn't prepared for an ENCORE and had to freestyle over the "LEAN BACK INSTRUMENTAL".. hahaha.. needless to say, San Antonio pulled up their pants and rocked away w/ ya boy.. haha, but this time I added a track just in case it happened.. and it did... I broke out "LEAVE YOU" from the archives and the crowd ate it up.. That was probably when it hit me just how much love these folks was throwing my way...I think I had my eyes closed for the first 2 verses cause I was getting a little overwhelmed.. When it was all said and down... I just had to let the mic hang on that one...Maaan.

At this point.. folks are exhausted.. hit the bar on the "last call blast" and sucked it up and sweated it out for THE NIYAT. The original intention was not for NIYAT to hit the stage this late, but there was a delay in their arrival which caused them to get pushed back. It was unfortunate because the crowd had moved to the back of the venue and outside to get some air, so it was not a reflection of any sorts involving their status. Regardless, a nice gathering of the Hip Hop faithful gathered in the front of the stage for'em and them boys launched into a fierce set, backed with Bangin Ass Beats and nothing but darts courtesy of SNAP, D-OLOGY, KHALIF(SP) and Tabu.. Kris aka Shadow held them boys down on the Video steez as folks was pumpin' their fist for the Subterrenean Clan, including the LATE NITE SNAX CREW. These cats are definitely onto something, they just need more oppurtunities to show these heads how it's done.

THE AFTERMATH:
Overall, the show was an incredible success.. the funny thing is..I personally felt soooo incomplete... I gave my absolute best show on one of the worst nights of my life...I left my heart and soul on that stage for yall... slowly walked off into the corner and broke...cracked...thanked the man upstairs for giving me the strength to finish and pulled myself back together to greet my people. Some folks knew it though, knew what all I had on my plate prior to the show, they could see it in my face, movements... It's those curve balls that life sometimes tosses at you. Sooner or later you catch up to the pitch and knock it out of the park, but you got to maintain your stance, if you know what I mean. Life is a series of these scenarios, But dogg.. I LOVE THE MUSIC...let me repeat...I lovvvve the music... So just like the sample from my track says, "I don't wanna leave you, but you leave me no other choice"... My reply is simply the same..."I Ain't Going No Where... Naw.. I Ain't Going No Where"... U Feel Me? -ZILLA

First and foremost, this whole bloggin sh*t used to seem reeeeeally stupid to me, like.. who in the f**k has all day to sit behind their PC and chronicle their work week, weekend, break-ups, one night stands, state of depression, drugged out mindstate and/or constant drunkeness...Even more crazy, was the fact that folks get up on these things and read about it, cry, comment, hate, etc... and now...I can't front, lately it seems to serve as therapy for ya boy. If you got some time.. Let me welcome you all inside the mind of a individual known as V-ZILLA THE MONSTER

Alot of folks know me man... It aint a braggadocio thing or a stroke my ego moment, but they know me....and lord knows I been putting in alot of work for quite some time, see..I'M AN MC!..(yeah I know, who don't you know that isn't a rapper nowadays)..Only difference with me is that, the path I chose has lead me to some pretttty big things, considering....I been fortunate enough to travel the world, rock some serious crowds, get some radio spins, sell some units, put a little change in my pocket, do some videos, Lockdown my clothing line and come back home to ZERO NOTARIETY... Mortgage, Light Bills, Cable, Vehicles, Insurance, Etc all still knocking on my door.. better yet pounding on it...

Imagine That.. The irony of being loved in Germany, Sweden, Japan and having your hometown be like... ZILLA-WHO ? (Pre Mike Jones).. But They Know Me... And If They Don't... They Will.. Please Believe..

A deal never seemed that impressive to me unless the artist was getting knocked off with a gangsta ass signing bonus, and the perks outweighed the bullsh*t... I mean lets be realistic, Corporate America and Politics especially in music have never led me to believe that the artist were getting the big end of the stick... So i was stuck in the middle... Underground heads didn't think I was underground enough, and I was right under the radar of being commercial... What to do now ? I just kind of progressed to the point that I was able to rock both sides of the cradle and toss up a middle finger to those that said I couldn't pull it off.. And so here is stands.. July 29, 2005.. Current Status ? Signed.. G-style Entertainment/Eve Media/Sony Music Group... What now ?

Ahhhhhh yes... THE PRESSURE...The underground is co-ed softball in comparison to being on a label where they shoot down 6 out of your best 10 tracks... I could get into some serious details about it all, but why bore you...It's a management thing.. haha... The good news..I got that MONSTER of a hit they been killin' me for... Matter of fact, I knew right when I finished recording it, that it was "The One"(Shouts 2 Frankie J)...AND NOW? the waiting game ensues...The shopping of the singles, the last minute changes, the marketing strategy... The "can we get at least 2 more like that zilla" or my personal favorite, "I like the hook man, killer hook, but we need to bring the verses back down a notch, don't forget the ladies"... AHHHHH YES.. The ladies... and this is only a single folks, can't wait to see what they want to FLIP on the album... (That 6 out of 10 may change to 8 at the rate i'm spitting tracks out.. too strong for them boys)... bottom line.. I understand the game.. Now

Realistically speakling..I was built for this sh*t.. the wait has been worth it (in my eyes)..although some days it does sting like habinero pepper to the tongue...other days I have to convince wifey (as well as my self) that all the late nights in the streets, botched studio times, side hustles and high ass light bills will mean something.... She believes in me... But she also believes in having a contingency plan so she's almost done locking down her Bachelors in Accounting.. (Accounting? Money? Yeaaah I get it now.. Who's Money? haha)...That's real though... I aint a back-up plan kind of cat, I take chances.. I feel i've grown more than I ever imagined as an artist though... Some of my core folks are gonna be pissed... The rest that understand that growth are gonna be like..ABOUT TIME ZILLA...I know who walks with me..I know who walks behind me and I understand the game... Now
